Sony SAL-50M28 50mm f/2.8 Macro

Last Updated on February-17-2010 Add Comments

Get incredibly close to small subjects with the SAL-50M28 macro lens. It allows you to easily capture the most subtle details with spectacular clarity.

A compact macro-focus lens that covers the full range from life-size to infinity. “Life size” macro imaging means that the image you capture is the same size as the subject in reality, giving you spectacularly sharp photos of insects, flowers, gemstones, postage stamps and other small nature subjects and collectibles. Mounted on the Sony α DSLR-A100 camera, the SAL-50M28 macro lens provides a 75mm focal length (35mm equivalent), which means it can also be used as a standard and midrange telephoto lens.

Sharp Macro Focusing
You can get closer to your subject to capture low-angle shots of insects, flowers and other natural wonders — and broad depth of field lets you keep backgrounds in focus too.

Focus Range Limiter
Speeds auto-focus response by limiting the range of distances that are brought into focus — Close-up Range, or Telephoto Range.

Circular Aperture
Because aperture blades form a near circle at the wide openings used for low-light shots, spot-light sources have a pleasing circular defocused effect.

High Contrast and Resolution
Excellent optical precision gives your shots greater visual accuracy for close analysis of your subject.

Auto Clutch
In auto-focus mode, the manual focus ring does not rotate — which improves handling ease.

Bright f2.8 Aperture
In conjunction with the Super SteadyShot® image stabilization system of the Sony ± (alpha) DSLR-A100 camera, this lens captures bright, steady images even working with hand-held camera in low light.

Focus Hold Button
For full creative control, a focus hold button located on the lens can lock auto-focusing.

Sony 50mm f2.8 Macro Review by AlphaMountWorld.com

For those of you who haven’t yet dived into the world of macro, you should consider this lens as a first purchase, simply because it is a bit less intimidating and a bit more versatile than the longer focal macro lenses in some aspects. Getting a true macro lens is a whole different experience than using other lenses, the power of getting really close to your subjects is intoxicating, and somewhat addicting. The good news is, that when you really want to make excellent images worthy of sale, this lens will be in your kit years down the road well after you’ve become a professional. Again if you haven’t tried a true macro lens, you really need to purchase or rent one to truly appreciate this totally different aspect of photography. This lens makes a great first timers Macro lens, and one a professional would rely on.

AlphaMountWorld grades this lens an “A” or 9.5 out of 10 for superior optical quality and versatility.

Sony 50mm f/2.8 macro ( SAL-50M28 ) – Review / Test Report by photozone.de

The Sony 50mm f/2.8 macro is certainly a very good lens but it does not really stand out from the crowd – macro lenses simply tend to be top performers. The resolution potential of the lens is very high straight from f/2.8. The vignetting is usually not field-relevant and the level of distortions is negligible. The quality of the bokeh is very decent. Technically lateral CAs may be a tad too high at large aperture settings but it’s not really something to worry about. The build quality of the lens is good although there’re also no reasons to rave about it here either. The Sony lens has a price tag around 400US$/€ which is a bit steep compared to the third-party alternatives. Regarding its Canon and Nikon counterparts the Sony lens does also feel a little dated.
