Nikon calls their D4 Digital SLR Camera a “total professional imaging machine”. They would be correct in doing so. Designed for the working photographer, the D4 meets the most-demanding photog’s needs and then some. Packed with features essential to getting the job done, and getting it done well this rig is more than a digital camera, it’s a shooter’s bread and butter.

Building off the basic structure of its predecessor, the D4 goes big in a number of ways which are sure to be appreciated. The camera features a 16.2Mp 36 x 23.9mm CMOS sensor with Nikon’s FX-format and the EXPEED3 image processor. ISO sensitivity can now be extended as low as ISO 50 or as high as 204,800 with a standard range of 100-12,800 ISO. Additionally, 10 frames per second continuous shooting in FX-format for up to 200 shots ensures the decisive moment will not be missed.

The D4 records in RAW, JPEG, TIFF, and RAW + JPEG files. Metering options include RGB 3D Color Matrix III metering, center-weighted, and spot. Additionally, compatible storage media includes the future of professional storage, XQD memory cards, and Type I CompactFlash memory cards (UDMA compliant). Of course, NIKKOR AF-S and AF-I lenses are compatible with the D4 body, putting an extensive line of lenses at the photographer’s disposal.Another improvement on D4′s little brother would be the slightly bigger LCD screen. Up from 3″, the D4 has a 3.2″ LCD monitor with a 170° viewing angle, approximately 100% frame coverage, automatic monitor brightness control, and Live View. In Live View the image can be enlarged up to 46x to make on the spot focus confirmation. Surrounding the monitor are illuminated buttons for ease of use even in low light. Additionally, quick access Live View confirms exposure, white balance, monitor hue, histogram, focus mode, AF area mode, and focusing accuracy with ease. The D4 also boasts stellar auto focus features – like 51 AF points, an AF mode selector switch, and fast AF point selection. All three of these components of the AF system ensure accurate, fast shooting whether the subject is a room full of children or a high-speed sporting event.

Of course, the D4 wouldn’t be a professional level DSLR if it didn’t include full HD video capture. The D4 does so, making it equally a pro videographer’s tool as much as a pro photographer’s. From 1080p broadcast quality video at 30 or 24 fps to full manual control to the option to add an external mic for stereo audio capture, the D4 isn’t just a digital camera that also captures video.Features like the aforementioned Live View allow the videographer to confirm capture of their footage on the camera’s LCD and an external (optional) monitor simultaneously. It also gives you access to Picture Controls to handle the look and feel of the video, in-camera. Peak audio meters also allow the videographer to adjust sound levels manually in 20 incremental steps. Remote start and stop of view using wired and wireless remote accessories is also an option, among many others.Nikon FX-format (36 x 23.9mm) CMOS Sensor with 16.2 Effective Megapixels
D4 achieves an ideal balance of high pixel count and FX-format sensor size, producing exceptionally sharp, clean and well-saturated images and offers flexibility in post-production cropping for magazine-quality print and web publishing

3.2″ Super-Sharp 921,000-Dot LCD Monitor with Automatic Monitor Brightness Control
Ambient brightness sensor automatically adjusts LCD visibility according to environment for bright, crisp image playback, menu adjustment and Live View shooting. Enlarge images up to 46x to make on the spot focus confirmation – crucial for high resolution shooting

Full 1080p HD Broadcast Quality Video
Create true broadcast quality video using Full 1080p video at 30 or 24fps in H.264/MPEG-4 AVC HD format. D4′s 16.2Mp sensor combined with B-frame data compression delivers high quality video ensuring unmatched moving image integrity for clips up to 29 min. 59 sec. in length. Fast sensor readout enables reduced rolling shutter – especially useful during panning sequences

View Simultaneous Live View Output on External Monitors & Record Uncompressed Video Via HDMI
Check video recording on the camera’s LCD and external monitor simultaneously; ideal for focus pullers and camera operators. When the highest possible image quality is required you can bypass memory cards and record uncompressed footage directly from the image sensor onto an external storage device. Options to customize the HDMI output signal are also included

Full HD Recording with FX, DX (1.5x crop) and 1920 x 1080 (2.7x) Crop Mode Settings
The FX-based format renders exquisitely shallow depth of field (DOF) as well as wide-angle shooting. The DX-based format offers a picture angle that is 1.5x crop to the focal length and is ideal when you can’t get close enough to the action when an existing lens is used. For even more of a telephoto effect, the 1920 x 1080 crop format gives you a 2.7x. Versatility like this lets you explore different moods with the large and comprehensive selection of NIKKOR lenses. All three modes deliver exceptional Full HD 1080p output

Standard ISO 100 to 12,800, Expandable from ISO 50 Up to ISO 204,800 Equivalent
The 16.2 megapixel D4 offers similar clean, low-noise performance as its predecessor D3s at ISO 12,800 and expands the range by one EV, making ISO 100 standard. For more extreme/challenging conditions, drop to ISO 50 equivalent or raise sensitivity to as high as ISO 204,800 equivalent. With the D4, shoot confidently in nearly any light – even in places where the human eye has difficulty focusing

10/11 Frames Per Second Continuous Shooting in FX-format for Up to 200 Frames
Realize 10 fps shutter bursts with full AF and AE performance in FX-format. Boost the frame rate up to 11 fps in FX-format, locking focus on the position detected in the first frame

Faster, More Responsive 51-Point AF System
D4′s AF sensor utilizes 51 strategically placed AF points that are designed to capture subjects as you choose: by working together like a net to capture moving subjects or for pinpoint accuracy. Use a single AF point to home in on the exact place on your chosen subject. Each of the 51 AF points delivers fast and accurate AF detection to an impressive low light level of -2 EV (ISO 100, 20ºC) with every AF NIKKOR lens – expect to shoot more smoothly at night stadium assignments, poorly lit indoor arenas, cathedrals, theaters and any other low-lit venues

AF Detection Up to f/8
D4 aligns its 15 cross-type sensors in the center to detect contrast for both vertical and horizontal lines with lenses f/5.6 or faster. The five central points and three points to the left and right of them in the middle line are compatible with f/8

EXPEED 3 for Faithful Colors, Fine Tones and Wide Dynamic Range: Optimized for Stills and HD Video
EXPEED 3 results in still images with faithful, well-saturated color and natural depth. Tones are subtle and nuanced, from pure pitch black to pure white. For images produced even under harsh light, the D4 output preserves smooth color gradation with abundant tone and detail. When shooting in dim lighting at high ISOs, the camera’s intelligent noise reduction lowers noise without degrading image sharpness. Full HD 1080p video is rendered with reduced moiré, false colors, jaggies, and sharp edges. Noise reduction technology specifically designed for video preserves clarity

Comprehensive High Fidelity Audio Recording and Playback Control
Built-in external stereo microphone input allows for recording crystal clear sound using the optional ME-1 Stereo Microphone and can be precisely controlled in 20 incremental steps. Check audio in isolation as you record using headphones directly connected to the camera. Preview adjustments before or during Live View recording

Time Lapse Shooting: Capture a Variety of Scenes of Subjects at a Breathtaking Pace
The D4′s time-lapse shooting lets you set intervals and frame rates in order to dramatically relay slow-moving activity at dramatic speeds. The D4 allows you to shoot time-lapse photography with replaying rates from 24 times to 36,000 times faster than normal. Time-lapse shooting files can also be saved as movie files

91,000 Pixel RGB 3D Color Matrix Metering III with Advanced Scene Recognition System
Face detection using the optical viewfinder and detailed scene analysis using the 91K RGB sensor enables superior auto exposure, auto white balance detection, AF performance and i-TTL flash exposure

Two Live View Shooting Modes
Photography Live View and Movie Live View modes add flexibility; exposure, white balance, monitor hue, histogram, focus mode, AF area mode and focusing accuracy are easily confirmed

Expand Dynamic Range Using Built-In HDR
Combines two exposures at up to 3EV to create a single image revealing an extremely wide dynamic range, but with less noise and richer color gradation than ever before

Flash Compensation and Exposure Compensation Separated for Better Creative Control
With the D4, in addition to conventional global flash and background exposure compensation, as well as flash exposure compensation, there is a new function that allows you to compensate only the background exposure independently from the subject illuminated by Nikon Speedlights

Dedicated Nikon Picture Control Button
Convenient Picture control button provides six preset options: Standard, Neutral, Vivid, Monochrome, Landscape and Portrait for stills and video while 9 customizable settings provide advanced, personalized color control

Two Axis Virtual Horizon Graphic Indicator
Use either LCD monitor or viewfinder to check if camera is level; horizontally or with forward or rear rotation

Improved Vertical Shooting Operation
One unique set of controls for both horizontal and vertical shooting. Comprised of a main-command dial, an AF-ON button and a joystick style AF selector, each set is laid out identically for a more intuitive operation regardless of camera orientation

Speedier AF Point Selection
In addition to the round multi-selector used for AF point selection, the D4 incorporates a new joystick style sub-selector made of rubber that’s more responsive to your finger’s touch. Positioned for optimal control during both horizontal and vertical shooting, this new button permits a speedier shift of AF points

Illuminated Buttons Let You Set Functions in Low-Lit and Even Dark Shooting Situations
D4 uses back-illuminated operation buttons and release mode dials for clear visibility in the dark

Magnesium Alloy Body with Weather Sealing
To sustain peak performance, even in the most demanding environmental conditions, the body, exterior, and mirror box of the D4 are comprised of strong-yet-lightweight magnesium alloy. This assures the camera’s superb reliability and extra long life. Thorough measures are taken to seal and protect against invasive moisture, dust and even electromagnetic interference. A comprehensive weather and dust sealing, combined with additional Nikon engineering, further ensure integrity of the camera body

400,000 Cycles Durable, Accurate Shutter Unit with Mirror Balancer
For the utmost reliability and rigorous performance, the D4′s shutter has been tested for 400,000 cycles on fully assembled cameras at extreme continuous burst rates for extended time periods. The camera’s mirror balancer minimizes the bounce of the mirror’s down movement with such finesse that it extends viewing time and allows more time for AF operation – one reason why the D4 can offer autofocus and focus tracking even during high-speed continuous shooting

Self-Diagnostic Shutter Monitor
To sustain precision shutter operation throughout the mechanism’s lifespan, the D4 incorporates intelligent shutter monitor technology. Should any shutter speed variance be detected, the camera automatically corrects to adjust between actual speed and correct shutter speed

WT-5A Wireless Transmitter Compatibility
With Image transmission mode you can transmit images to an FTP server or computer, either automatically or by manually selecting images. With PC mode you can operate the D4 via Camera Control Pro 2. For HTTP mode: You can use a web browser via computer or smart phone, show thumbnails of images stored in the camera’s memory cards, or make slide shows, view images, operate simple camera controls for remote shooting or begin live view shooting, including video, which is new to the WT-5A. From one master camera, release up to 10 remote D4 camera and WT-5A combinations. An optional iPhone application for remote control is also available for the WT-5A

Intelligent Power Management
Power consumption and power management systems are engineered throughout the D4 for even greater operating efficiency using a new, small and high-capacity EN-EL18 rechargeable Li-ion battery. Expect long battery life and the ability to shoot up to approx. 2,600 images per charge

Sony’s α (Alpha) NEX-5 takes mirror-less/finder-less, interchangeable-lens camera technology to the next level by integrating the resolving power of an APS-format imaging sensor in a camera body that’s 48% smaller and 49% lighter than traditional compact DSLRs.

While the camera is physically smaller than a compact DSLR, it retains the imaging qualities of an APS imaging sensor, which contains 58% more surface area than a Four Thirds imaging sensor, and about 13 times the surface area of point-and-shoot imaging sensors. The end result is true pro-quality resolving power in a far smaller package. For still imaging, the NEX-5 captures JPEGs (Fine or Standard), RAW, or JPEG+RAW in a choice of sRGB or Adobe RGB color spaces. In addition to stills, the NEX-5 also captures HS 1080/60i video as well as Full-AVCHD video with Dolby Digital (AC-3) / MPEG-4 audio. For more precise audio there is an optional shoe-mounted shotgun mic that features 90°/120° tilt movement.

The NEX-5 is designed to use Sony E-series lenses, a compact line of optics designed to work with the reduced flange distance that resulted from the removal of the reflex viewing system. The new E-series optics are smaller than Sony’s traditional DSLR optics while retaining the imaging qualities Sony is recognized for. In addition to Sony E-series optics, you can also use any of Sony’s traditional DSLR lenses (as well as all Minolta AF-mount optics) on the NEX-5 by using the optional LA-EA1 lens adapter. (Note – Manual focus and full-open aperture metering only when using LA-EA1 lens adapter)

The Live View viewing system of the Sony NEX-5 consists of a hi-fidelity 3″, 921,600-dot TFT TruBlack LCD that can be tilted downward 45° and upwards of 80° for composing still or video images from extreme angles and/or in tighter shooting quarters.

As for performance levels, the NEX-5′s Contrast Auto Focus system has quick response times and can capture full-res stills at burst-rates up to 7 frames-per-second. Low-light shooters will appreciate the ability to increase ISO sensitivity up to 12800, not to mention the NEX-5′s Anti-Motion Blur and Hand-held Twilight modes, which capture 6 rapid-sequence images of a subject, analyze the exposure and focusing details of each image, and layer the optimum portions of these exposures into a single optimized image.

Another cool feature found on the Sony NEX-5 is Sony’s renowned Sweep Panorama mode, which captures up to 60 individual images and stitches them together in-camera to produce panoramic images up to 226° across by simply pressing the shutter and ‘sweeping’ the camera vertically or horizontally across the area you want to capture.

Other features found on the Sony NEX-5 include manual overrides for focus and exposure controls, Auto HDR capture and a Dynamic Range Optimizer for expanding shadow and highlight details, Advanced Anti-Dust technologies, 8 Scene modes and 6 Creative settings, Background Defocus, for in-camera selective-focus control, a 25-point AF system, HDMI connectivity, and up to 330 exposures per battery charge.

Because Sony NEX-series are designed with hand-held, low-light/high ISO imaging in mind, there is no built-in flash. But for times you want or need to use flash, a low-profile Sony HVL-F7S P-TTL flash (guide # 7m @ ISO 100) is included with each camera.

Included with this kit is a Sony E 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 OSS lens (27-82.5mm equivalent), which contains 11 elements in 9 groups, 4 aspheric surfaces, a minimum focus of 0.82′ (0.25 m), and Optical SteadyShot technology for up to 4-stops of vibration reduction.

This is the world’s smallest interchangeable lens digital still camera (as of April 2010). Removing the conventional mirror box, AF sensor and viewfinder, and reducing the “flange back” distance enables image quality of a DSLR in a camera that’s 48% smaller and 49% lighter than Sony’s compact DSLRs.APS-C Size HD Image Sensor
The NEX-5 contains the same sensor format that Sony builds into the full-sized DSLRs. With 13 times the area of the typical image sensor, APS-C makes the difference between “snapshots” and “photographs,” delivering an exceptional combination of high resolution, high sensitivity and gorgeous, blurred backgrounds.Interchangeable Lenses
Compatible with Sony’s E-mount series of smaller, lighter lenses designed specifically for α compact interchangeable lens cameras. Opens up a world of creative options.First in Class with 1080/60i Video
This is the world’s first interchangeable lens still camera with 1080/60i AVCHD Full HD, exactly the same resolution and frame rate as most broadcast and cable HDTV channels. Records in 1080/60i AVCHD format, 1080/30p high definition in PC-friendly MP4 format and standard definition 480/30p in MP4 format.14.2 Megapixel Resolution
You get incredible detail and gorgeous enlargements. Thanks to the APS-C sensor size and Sony Exmor APS HD CMOS technology, the camera achieves high resolution with no penalty in low-light sensitivity or sensor noise.Up to 7 Frames-per-Second
Capture the decisive moment in sports and get the ideal baby photo. Up to 7 fps continuous shooting at full 14.2 MP resolution with exposure and focus fixed at the first frame. Standard continuous shooting at up to 2.3 fps.ISO 12800 Sensitivity
Incredibly clear low-light pictures without sacrificing detail. As of April 2010, this is best-in-class performance, made possible by low-noise Exmor APS HD CMOS image sensor and refined BIONZ image processor.

Ultra-light Magnesium Alloy Fascia
The camera combines high strength with low weight, thanks to the Magnesium alloy front fascia.

Sweep Panorama
Capture expansive landscapes automatically. Press the shutter, sweep vertically or horizontally. The camera does the rest, continuously shooting images and stitching them together. Up to 23 MP image size. Up to 226 degrees maximum sweep angle (16mm focal length).

AntiMotion Blur Mode
Corrects for subject movement to capture amazingly clean and sharp images in low-light. The camera leverages the large, APS-C image sensor and captures six images in a fraction of a second. Combining the data from all six creates a single image that minimizes subject blur.

Hand-held Twilight Mode
Get cleaner and sharper nighttime pictures-beyond the capability of traditional cameras-without using flash or a tripod. The camera leverages the large, APS-C image sensor and captures six images in a fraction of a second. Combining the data from all six creates a single image of extraordinary detail and low noise.

Auto HDR Built into Camera
High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography captures more scene contrast than a single exposure can handle by combining the best highlight detail from one shot and the best shadow detail from another for one incredible shot. Until recently, you needed a computer and editing software. Sony builds HDR in. Handles severe backlighting and other high-contrast scenes (Recommended for still subjects).

Live View LCD
The LCD monitor is active full-time for composing shots. Provides a what-you-see-is-what-you-get preview of white balance, focus, depth of field, exposure and 100% framing accuracy, plus informative on-screen displays.

Tiltable 3″ LCD Screen
Empowers your photography with a different point of view. Tilts down 45° and up 80° to frame high- and low-angle shots that would otherwise be hit-or-miss.

920K Pixel TruBlack LCD Screen
Sony’s Xtra Fine LCD monitor has best-in-class resolution (as of April 2010). The TruBlack screen includes a special resin layer to suppress internal reflections, increase contrast compared to conventional LCDs. Sunny Weather mode boosts visibility even further in bright sunlight.

Fast Auto Focus
Some cameras in this class are slow to focus. That can make you miss the shot on fast-moving subjects like sports and unpredictable subjects like pets and babies. Sony’s fast Contrast Auto Focus system typically takes just 0.3 seconds. Also offers continuous Auto Focus when shooting movies.

Intelligent Auto Focus
Pre-focuses as you compose the shot, further reducing focusing time to a bare minimum.

iAUTO (Intelligent Auto) Mode
Unifies and simplifies Sony intelligent technologies. Takes advantage of Intelligent Scene Recognition, Face Detection technology, and Optical SteadyShot image stabilization without leaving auto mode so you always get the best shot.

On-screen Help Guide
Provides ready reference, explains the camera’s modes and settings. Walks you through camera operation so you get the best shot. Helps you advance from basic operation to greater sophistication.

Control Wheel + Soft Keys
Unlike cameras that bristle with knobs, buttons and dials, the NEX-5 features a simple turn-and-click Control Wheel and context-sensitive Soft Keys. It’s elegant, uncluttered and intuitive.

BIONZ image processor
The brain of the camera is a refined version of Sony’s BIONZ image processor. Its chroma noise reduction delivers high-resolution, low-noise photos even at ISO 12800 sensitivity. Also enables fast processing for up to 7 fps continuous shooting of data-intensive 14.2 megapixel images. Sweep Panorama and 6 image layering.

Accepts DSLR A-mount Lenses
Using the LA-EA1 adaptor, you can attach the full selection of α A-mount system lenses, which includes 28 current models and an installed base of millions of lenses worldwide. Operational restrictions apply.

25-point Auto Focus
25 sensors cover a very wide area of the scene, for accurate focusing even when the subject is far from the center of the frame.

Multi-Segment Measuring
Optimizes exposure based on 49 segments. Choice of Multi, Center and Spot metering accommodates a full range of shooting situations.

Manual Focus Assist
Greatly magnifies the viewfinder image when you touch the focus ring, making it easy to get razor-sharp images. Works with E-mount lenses only.

RAW Image Capture
The NEX-5 saves your pictures as compact JPEG files or ultra-high quality RAW files. RAW files save images prior to de-mosaicing, white balance, sharpness and color enhancement. This retains maximum latitude for enhancing the image on your PC.

“Background Defocus” Control
Cameras with APS-C sensors take beautiful pictures because they can blur the background. That helps make your subject stand out as the center of attention in portrait photography. But you’ve had to know about aperture f-stops and shutter speeds. Now Sony makes it easy. Simply turn the Control Wheel one way for backgrounds in focus, the other for background defocus.

Accepts Image Stabilized lenses
Selected E-mount lenses incorporate Optical SteadyShot image stabilization to combat the effects of camera shake. Building stabilization into the lenses enables the camera body to be remarkably thin and light.

Powerful Supplied Software
To help you refine and manage your images, the camera is equipped with computer software including Image Data Converter SR, Image Data Lightbox SR and Picture Motion Browser (PMB).

Face Detection technology
The camera can automatically detect up to eight individual faces and adjust focus, exposure, white balance and flash to help deliver crisp, properly lit images of family and friends. Can prioritize children or adults.

HDMI Output for HD Viewing
Enjoy HD movies and stunning still images on a compatible HDTV. The camera includes an HDMI output. In addition, the BRAVIA Sync system works with compatible Sony BRAVIA HDTVs enabling you to control camera playback using the television’s remote.

8 Scene Selection Modes
These help you get the shot by optimizing the camera for specific shooting situations. Select from Portrait, Sports, Macro, Landscape, Sunset, Night View, Night Portrait and Hand-held Night Shot modes.

6 Creative Style Settings
Control how the camera processes your images with six finishing styles: Standard, Vivid, Portrait, Landscape, Sunset and B&W. You can even fine-tune contrast, saturation, and sharpness to your personal taste.

P/A/S/M Operating Modes
The NEX-5 offers a full range of controls from the beginner’s iAUTO mode to P/A/S/M: Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Manual. On-screen prompts help you refine your skills, build your confidence and exercise greater creative control.

Anti-Dust Technology
Anti-Dust Technology helps keep the CMOS sensor clean, resulting in consistently clear pictures. First a static-free coating on the sensor’s low-pass filter helps repel dust. Then vibration automatically dislodges dust from the sensor.

Up to 300 Shots of Battery Life
Take up to 300 shots on a single charge with Sony lithium ion Stamina battery power. Sony’s InfoLITHIUM battery system enables you to see the percent of power remaining, so you can keep shooting in confidence.

Supplied Detachable Flash
To help you shoot more effectively in formal portraits, the supplied flash has a Guide Number of 7.

Dual Media Slots
For cost-effective, convenient storage and sharing of your images, the camera accepts Memory Stick PRO Duo/Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo and SD/SDHC media (Class 4 or higher recommended).

PhotoTV HD Compatibility
Optimizes compatible BRAVIA televisions for gorgeous display of digital pictures.

Index and Slide Show Display
Quickly review your photos using 6- or 12-frame index views, or as an automatic slide show with fade-in/fade-out effect.

The NEX-7 is, without doubt, something of a technological triumph for Sony. It manages to fit a huge amount into a small camera, yet does so with barely a false move – at least in terms of the hardware.

The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GX1 joins Panasonic’s award-winning LUMIX G Series of digital cameras, which are acclaimed for their high image quality with small and compact body and lenses. The new LUMIX GX1 features a 16.01-megapixel Live MOS sensor and Venus Engine, helping to ensure real-to-life images through excellent resolution, image rendering and color reproduction. Even in low-light situations and at maximum 12800 high ISO sensitivity, the LUMIX GX1 can produce stunning photos and videos, and because of its compact size it can be easily carried for daily use.

The LUMIX GX1, like all the models in Panasonic’s LUMIX G Series of CSC, adopts Contrast AF for its focus system, so focusing is controlled by the image sensor. When compared with the Phase difference system AF, Contrast AF achieves higher accuracy especially when shooting with a bright lens with small F value. For instance, the accuracy of Contrast AF is approximately 90% while Phase difference AF is approximately 60% at F1.4. Additionally, with the precise Contrast AF system, the LUMIX GX1 achieves high resolution through an optimal balance of resolution and noise reduction, thus producing lifelike image rendering and highly precise Auto Exposure and white balance. To further advance the Contrast AF, the LUMIX GX1　incorporates full-area focusing, making it possible to set focus on any point in the field of view. With the LUMIX GX1’s 3.0-inch touch LCD screen, frame composition is intuitive and easy.

The LUMIX GX1 features an ultra high-speed Light Speed AF*, which means it can Auto Focus in approximately 0.09 second. This is achieved by reducing the detection time for focusing by the synchronizing the lens and sensor at 120 fps. Plus, the newly-added focus mode AFF (AF Flexible) locks on the focus when the shutter button is half-pressed, however, if the subject moves, the focusing is reset to get the best results. Combined with the Touch AF control, setting and focusing on the subject is incredibly easy and quick.

The touch-control system of the LUMIX GX1 lets users set the focus on the subject by simply touching it on the large, 460,000-dot wide-viewing angle LCD. Users can even release the shutter by touching the screen. Once locked on the subject with a touch, the LUMIX GX1 tracks the subject, even when it moves, using the AF tracking function. With a touch on the screen, users can select the part and the size of the AF area, choosing from 1-area AF, Multi-area AF with 23 AF areas and Pinpoint AF, which allows extremely precise focus setting.

Despite its compact size, the LUMIX GX1 is extremely intuitive to operate, with an optimized layout of control buttons, a mode dial and dedicated function buttons. Users can customize the two external buttons and two menus tabs to settings they most frequently use so they are easily accessible. In addition, a total of four custom setting patterns can be stored to the camera’s model dial – one on ‘C1’ and three on ‘C2.’ Furthermore, the LUMIX GX1 was designed to enhance its ergonomics, with a grip that fits naturally and comfortably in the hand, despite its flat profile and compact design. Plus, the LUMIX GX1 has a more tactile texture and the mode dial is easy to turn and features print that is easy to read and won’t easily wear.

The LUMIX GX1 can record 1920 x 1080 at 60i, with sensor output of 30p, full-High Definition videos in the AVCHD format which excels in both compression efficiency and compatibility with AV equipment for playback. In addition to the practical full-time AF, the Touch AF in video recording also lets users enjoy professional-like rack focusing. Just by pointing at the subject, the focus is shifted so it stands out. With a dedicated video record button on the top, users can instantly start recording videos while shooting photos without any having to make any extra setting adjustments. Along with the full-HD video capabilities, the LUMIX GX1 also features high-quality sound, recorded with Dolby® Digital Stereo Creator. Videos can also be recorded in MP4 format for playback on a PC or other portable electronic devices without having to convert the files.

Additional Features

A new Level Gauge, which lets the camera detect the horizontal/vertical angle of view with its internal level working with the sensor. In addition, photos shot in portrait aspect will be automatically displayed vertically, regardless of which lens is used.

One Push AE adjusts exposure with a single press of the “Fn” (Function) button when it is over/under exposed, which is especially useful when shooting outdoors with open aperture or indoors with fast shutter speed.

Dust Reduction System helps to eliminate dust or foreign matter getting inside the LUMIX GX1 when lenses are being changed. By placing a supersonic wave filter in front of the Live MOS sensor that vibrates vertically around 50,000 times per second, the filter repels dust and other particles effectively.

Zoom operation can be controlled with touch control when either of Panasonic’s new LUMIX X Power Zoom lenses are attached. And the zoom speed can also be adjusted in two steps for more precise control.

Popular iA and iA Plus modes for beginners looking for automatic shooting in both still and video modes.

Increased energy consumption and an approximately 11%** longer battery life when compared to the LUMIX DMC-G3, which also uses the same battery pack DMW-BLD10.

The LUMIX G Series is a robust system of bodies and lenses, featuring a total of 14 Micro Four Thirds lenses including the new power zoom X lens – standard zoom lens, telephoto zoom lens, single focal length lens, wide-angle lens, fish-eye lens, macro lens, and even a 3D lens – to fit a variety of shooting scenarios and occasions.

The Micro Four Thirds System products are joining today’s Four Thirds System products to provide customers with even higher levels of performance in a digital interchangeable lens camera. In addition to LUMIX G lenses, the LUMIX DMC-GX1 can use any interchangeable lens that complies with the Four Thirds System standard via an optional mount adapter for the unlimited number of lens properties. The LUMIX GX1 system camera offers a wide variety of options to choose from to match every shooting situation and shooting style, including: external flashes, PL filters, ND filters, MC protectors, remote shutter, zoom level, battery packs, AC adaptor, DC coupler, straps, cases, bags and more. Plus, with the LUMIX GX1’s hot shoe on the top, users can attach the optional tilt-shift Live View Finder (DMW-LVF2), with approximately 1.4x and 1,440,000-dot equivalent, 100% field of view.

USB 2.0 Hi-speed interface (which performs like one, a good 5+ MB/sec)

Smaller and lighter than the D2X and will make a good alternative for many photographers

Excellent value for money considering the competition

Conclusion – Cons

Higher noise at ISO 1600 and 3200 than we would like, mostly in shadows

High ISO noise reduction works but at the expense of detail

2nd Generation Translucent Mirror Technology camera

24.3 MP for superb detail and amazing enlargements

World?s fastest up to 12 fps continuous shooting

World’s first OLED viewfinder; big and bright

World’s first HD Movie mode with AVCHD 60p/60i/24p

The Sony Alpha SLT-A77 vies with professional digital SLRs from the company’s rivals, offering a whopping resolution of 24.3 megapixels from an Exmor APS HD CMOS image sensor. Coupled with Sony’s latest-generation Bionz image processor, this offers the ability to capture a whopping twelve full-resolution frames per second with a fixed aperture, leading Sony to describe the the A77 as being the world’s fastest APS-C interchangeable-lens camera. Even with a variable aperture, the A77 offers a very swift eight frames per second. The A77′s solid, weather-sealed magnesium alloy body also includes a new LCD articulation mechanism that allows viewing from in front of the camera, even when mounted on a tripod.

Another key point of the new design is its new Organic LED electronic viewfinder, which offers a staggering 2.4 million RGB dots of resolution. There’s also a new 19-point autofocus sensor with 11 cross-type points, 1,200 zone metering, shutter speeds to 1/8,000 second, and ISO sensitivity ranging from 50 to 16,000 equivalents. The Sony A77 also offers the ability to capture Full HD video at 60 progressive-scan frames per second, from 60 fps sensor data, another world’s first for an interchangeable lens camera, says Sony. As you’d expect for an SLT-series camera, the A77 offers full-time phase detection autofocus during video capture, a unique selling point of Sony’s Translucent Mirror design. Full manual and priority exposure control is possible during movie capture.

Alongside the camera body, Sony has unveiled a new weather-sealed zoom lens, the Sony DT 16-50mm F2.8 SSM. There’s also a new portrait / battery grip designed for the A77 body, the VG-C77AM vertical grip, and again weather-sealed. (Together with the existing HVL-F43AM flash strobe, this brings together the possibility of a completely sealed system, although the remainder of Sony’s lens lineup isn’t currently sealed.)

The Sony SLT-A77 should be available in the US market from October 2011. Body-only pricing is set at approximately US$1,400, while a kit version including the Sony DT 16-50mm F2.8 SSM standard zoom lens will be priced at around US$2,000. (The lens itself will also be available separately a few weeks after the A77′s launch, priced at around $700 by itself.) The VG-C77AM vertical grip will be available in October, and cost about US$300.

Sony SLT-A77 In-depth Review by DPReview.com

It is the A77′s high speed shooting modes which have grabbed the most attention, but again, we find ourselves celebrating other, less flashy aspects of the camera’s feature set. Its excellent EVF, versatile and intuitive live view and AF system, and its solid, reassuringly well thought-out operational ergonomics are all better reasons to buy this camera.

Overall the A77 is a logical, and successful upgrade to the pioneering A55, and one that should make a lot of enthusiast photographers very happy. If you’re interested in the A77 as a sports and fast-action camera though, don’t be blinded by its fast framerates alone. The A77 is very good, but in our experience the more conventional Canon EOS 7D and Nikon D7000 both offer slightly more reliable AF tracking and framerates which although slower than 12fps, are still plenty fast enough for most applications.

Sony SLT-A77 Hands-on Preview by DPReview.com

After a four-year wait, Sony has returned to the enthusiast/semi-pro end of the DSLR market. Having made little impact in that market with the A700 that very closely resembled the conventional DSLRs made by Canon and Nikon, Sony has spent the intervening time developing something a bit different. The A77 builds on the company’s ‘translucent mirror’ technology, and uses an electronic rather than optical viewfinder. The final result is a product that may look traditional, but is able to promise the unconventional.

Sony Alpha SLT-A77 Hands-On Preview by imaging-resource.com

Making a major leap in the camera market, the Sony A77 reaches into pro territory, able to capture 12 frames per second with a 24.3-megapixel camera that feels great and handles like your typical enthusiast digital SLR. Its optional 16-50mm kit lens also delivers excellent quality for the money.

Sony SLT A77 – A First Impressions Review by luminous-landscape.com

A900 or A77? A tough call. The A900 currently sells for some $2,700; a full $1,200 dollars more than the new A77. The A77 is weatherproof, has higher frame rates, GPS, electronic level, an articulated LCD, and a built in flash. The A900 has one of the world’s best (and maybe last) large and bright reflex prism viewfinders. Like I said – a tough call.

Panasonic boasts that their DMC-G3 Digital Camera is even better than the company’s G2. With an enhanced 16Mp sensor, a Free Angle touch LCD, improved access thanks to the mode dial, and other numerous enhancements, it would appear they’re right. One way in which the G3 didn’t change is that it still provides the user with the versatile Micro Four Thirds lens mount for attaching any number of Four Thirds lenses, and then some. That means the photographer will have all the advantages of a large DSLR camera, in a compact body. There’s no compromise when traveling – both the ability to move quickly with light weight gear and to take creative images are available when shooting with a Micro Four Thirds camera.

Of course, the G3 also shoots 1080i HD video! What digital camera worth its salt doesn’t these days? Knowing that HD DSLR video is the wave of the future and a driving force behind the Micro Four Thirds movement, Panasonic was sure to include 1920 x 1080/60i capture. Features like a built-in stereo microphone and a live viewfinder help the user to capture impressive movies. Using the aforementioned HDMI connection, those same movies can be outputted to an HDTV for immediate viewing on the big screen.

Whether the shooter is capturing stills or video, the lens options for the G3 are impressive. The Micro Four Thirds mount allows for 11 lens options from the Lumix G MFT System. There’s even a 3D lens available for capturing 3-dimensional and 2D images simultaneously. In addition, lens adapters are available for mounting Leica M and Leica R lenses and older Lumix full Four Thirds lenses. In addition, many Lumix MFT lenses feature optical image stabilization, which helps to prevent blur or un-wanted motion.

The DMC-G3′s 3.0″ free angle touchscreen LCD helps the shooter to capture from numerous angles, and to replay video and stills with ease – whether it’s an audience of one, or the entire family is gathered around. The touch controls on the LCD allow for navigating the menu, focusing, and playback, along with triggering the shutter. Other noteworthy features include the camera’s mode dial and hot shoe. The mode dial enables fast access to common camera modes like Aperture Priority and Manual, and it also provides access to additional settings, including two custom modes, scene modes, and the Creative Control Mode. In addition, there’s also a dedicated video button that can activate video capture without requiring that the camera modes change. Additionally, the hot shoe allows for attachment of external flashes.

In addition to being a lightweight, user-friendly Compact Camera System, the G3 also provides the shooter with uncomplicated storage options. The internal memory card slot is compatible with SD/SDHC and SDXC memory cards. Of course, like most digital cameras today, files can also be off-loaded via the camera’s USB interface. Other camera connections worth mentioning here include the mini HDMI, an A/V output, and the 2.5mm min jack. The 2.5mm jack allows for connection of an optional remote for hands-free control of the camera.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-G3 Review by imaging-resource.com

With the compact system camera market heating up, Panasonic’s G3 shows that the drive is toward smaller and smaller designs, as was seen in the Sony NEX-5. While Panasonic has produced a smaller camera, the G3 marks several firsts, maintaining major big-camera features while reducing the camera’s size, increasing its novelty and portability.

Introducing the α900. A camera whose stellar image quality eclipses everything you have known before.
At its heart is a 35mm full-frame Exmor™ CMOS sensor that represents the culmination of a dream. With 24.6-megapixel* resolution that captures details so fine, and color so rich and natural, you will never be satisfied with anything less again.
The α900 digital SLR from Sony. In truth, it is a camera like no other.

The a900 digital SLR from Sony sets a new benchmark for serious photo enthusiasts who demand the unrivaled quality and creative possibilities of full-frame imaging.

The flagship of the a DSLR range features the industry’s first ever 24.6 effective megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor. Developed by Sony, this groundbreaking sensor’s ultra-high pixel count and large size – equivalent to a 35mm film frame – deliver extraordinary image detail and wide dynamic range.

The new-generation sensor captures flawless images with unprecedented fidelity, characterized by vibrant colours, ultra-real textures and subtle tonal gradations. Complementing the extremely high native resolution of the sensor, Exmor™ performs on-chip analogue/digital (A/D) signal conversion and two-stage noise reduction. This guarantees ultra-low noise image files that take advantage of the superb resolving power of high-precision a lenses.

Realising the immense creative potential of the 24.6 megapixel full-frame sensor, the new advanced dual BIONZ™ processors handle massive amounts of image data at extremely high speed. Powerful noise reduction algorithms are applied prior to RAW data conversion and then again during image processing, yielding flawless, detail packed images with an absolute minimum of noise. The dual BIONZ™ processors also underpin the camera’s razor-sharp shooting responses, allowing sustained 5fps continuous shooting at full 24.6 megapixel resolution.

Sony Alpha DSLR-A900 review by imaging-resource.com

Sony started the year promising a lot for their flagship camera. We didn’t have a name, nor a long list of features, but we did know that the sensor would be a 24.6-megapixel design that was expected to impress. It certainly has done that.

The Sony A900 is a formidable camera. It’s big, which won’t work for everyone, but I found it more than bearable with my medium-sized hands, and even my daughter had no trouble hefting the A900 with the 24-70mm f/2.8 attached and firing off a few frames.

If you want the most pixels in a small package, the Sony A900 is where you’ll find it. It’s bulky, but less so than the more expensive 1Ds Mark III, and that makes it easier to bring along. I enjoyed shooting with the 24-70mm f/2.8 Carl Zeiss so much that I recommend it if you can afford it. I recently attached the 18-70mm kit lens that comes with the A200, and the A900 felt quite a bit more bearable, though I can only imagine that high-res sensor would reveal all the flaws in that less-expensive lens.

Image quality is Sony’s best so far; not just in terms of resolution, but also in controlling their impulse to squelch all noise at the expense of detail. You can even turn off the high-ISO noise suppression that was once inaccessible.

Not only is the viewfinder so big and beautiful that you think you might fall in, the image quality has the same effect when you view the images on your computer. With the ability to capture full frame images at a high clip, the Sony A900 is one impressive image maker, and a certain Dave’s Pick.

Sony Alpha DSLR-A900 Review (October 2008, Simon Joinson) by DPReview.com

The biggest challenge to the Alpha 900 is probably the as yet untested Canon EOS 5D Mark II, which promises a similar resolution and a bag full of features (live view, video mode and so on) at a price that’s around 10% lower. There’s no doubt that existing Sony SLR and legacy Minolta film SLR users now have a fitting flagship model to salivate over and save up for, but in the face of such strong competitors the Alpha 900 may have a tough job persuading anyone to switch systems for it.

In conclusion this is, more than anything else at this end of the market, a true photographer’s camera, with at least one totally unique feature (the Super SteadyShot stabilization) and one that offers the best viewfinder and highest nominal resolution (and the lowest ‘cost per megapixel, incidentally) in its class. It’s capable of stunning results at up to ISO 400 (and is fine at ISO 800-1600 as long as you’re not printing posters), and it is incredibly fast and responsive in use. If Sony had managed to keep the price nearer to the $2000 mark (even if this meant fewer megapixels) I think it would be flying off the shelves. As it stands it will, I fear, struggle to make a serious impression on anyone other than the Sony/Minolta faithful. One thing is clear, however: anyone who thinks a consumer electronics giant can’t make a heavyweight photographic tool is seriously misguided.

As long as you take into account our reservations about the high ISO image quality (which we’d more easily forgive on a camera that wasn’t the best part of $3000), the Alpha 900 is a camera that just, by the skin of its teeth, offers enough to gain our highest award.

Sony A900 Field Report by luminous-landscape.com

As far as image quality is concerned, bear in mind that I had to look quite closely at the files – serious pixel-peeping really – to see the differences. I always figure that if I have to look this closely then the differences are probably so close as to be insignificant.

The system is a bit limited, but there are two new lenses, a 16-35/2.8 and a 70-400/4-5.6 both with SSM focussing. The new HVL-F58AM flash looks good too; with it’s unique swivelling head the problems of shooting vertically are overcome by the simple solution of tilting the whole flash head up into a vertical position – very clever.

The lens range is getting wider with the staple zoom lenses available – 16-35/2.8, 24-70/2.8 and 70-200/2.8. The exotics are lacking, no dedicated macro or tilt/shift lens and only one supertelephoto (300/2.8), but whether this is an issue will depend on the photographer. Certainly those lenses that are availably are of top quality optically; this is a priority for many people who want to squeeze the last drop of image quality out of their images.

All things considered I’d have to give this camera a big thumbs up.

Sony Alpha DSLR-A900 review by CameraLabs.com (And comparison to Canon EOS 5D, Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III and Nikon D700)

There’s no doubt the Sony Alpha DSLR-A900 delivers an impressive specification for the money, and one which stands-up well against its rivals. You get very high resolution images, quick continuous shooting, a superb viewfinder and built-in image stabilisation which works with any lens you attach. This is all packaged-into a unique-looking DSLR which has a superb match in the form of the excellent Carl Zeiss 24-70mm f2.8 lens.

But while the A900 does have HDMI and a VGA screen, it’s lagging behind in other modern features. There’s no Live View, and hence also no movie mode. There’s no Wifi accessory, nor a GPS option that’s dedicated to the A900. Then there’s that incredulous top information screen which doesn’t do a flagship model any favours. All are odd decisions and omissions given Sony’s reputation as an electronics giant and gadget leader.

Then again you may not care for modern gadgetry on a DSLR and find Sony’s approach with the A900 refreshingly traditional. Certainly if you’re in the market for a full-frame DSLR at this price point and aren’t bothered about these additional features, then the A900 potentially heads to the top of your list – although if you shoot at higher sensitivities, you may prefer the output from one of its rivals.

As always it’s crucial to honestly weigh-up which features you really need while also handling each model in person and considering the system as a whole. If you don’t need Live View and are happy to shoot at lower sensitivities, then the A900 could be your best choice of the three, while uniquely also boasting built-in anti-shake facilities.

Ultimately Sony has created a worthy flagship for the Alpha range that not only boasts high resolution full-frame performance, but delivers it with a responsive and enjoyable photographic experience. It’s also managed to produce the first and so far only full-frame body with built-in image stabilisation, and some of the latest Sony lenses are also looking very strong. As such we can award the A900 our Highly Recommend rating, although again compare very closely with its rivals – both Canon and Nikon have very compelling alternatives that need to be carefully considered.

This is all great news for anyone in the market for an ‘affordable’ full-frame model, as unlike the Canon EOS 5D for much of its lifespan, there’s now three models competing for your money – and that has to keep their pricing keen.

Nikon presents their Nikon 1 V1 Mirrorless Digital Camera. Well aware that many shooters want versatility without the bulk and weight of a DSLR, the famed imaging company has thrown its hat into the ring with this lightweight, interchangeable lens digital camera. From day one, 10.1Mp photos can be shot and 1080/60i HD video can be captured.

At its heart the V1 has a 13.2 x 8.8 CMOS sensor which uses Nikon’s CX image sensor format. Helping to capture stunningly detailed and vibrant footage would be the EXPEED 3 with dual image processors. Aside from quickly transferring information to the SD/SDHC or SDXC card being recorded to, EXPEED 3 enables phase detection autofocus.

This camera accepts 1 NIKKOR lenses to the camera’s Nikon 1 mount. No matter what the desired focal length, the V1 captures stills in JPEG and RAW and video in the MOV format, with H.264/MPEG-4 compression. Choices for enhancing both capture modes include adding the optional external ME-1 stereo microphone and using the optional SB-N5 Speedlight in the i-TTL hot shoe.

Integrated tools include a 3.0″ LCD display and a 100% view electronic viewfinder, with diopter adjustments. Command and features buttons also work to ensure user-friendliness. Internally, the impressive Advanced hybrid AF delivers 10 frames-per-second capture in autofocus mode and 60fps in manual mode, ensuring a clear shot of moving targets. Whether it’s ponies galloping in the surf or an active toddler, Nikon has gone to great lengths to ensure the moment will be captured with clarity. Making this possible is a combination of contrast and focal plane phase detect autofocus, with an incredible 73 point AF array.

Another highlight, Motion Snapshot, captures a succession of images with a just one click. Low light capabilities with a wide ISO range of 100-3200 and 6400, and Smart Photo Selector, which lets the camera handle the settings, also expand the creative possibilities of the V1. With these features, a lightweight and compact body, and interchangeable lenses, the possibilities are endless.
