The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens is a good low-light indoor photography lens – especially when a flash is not appropriate or desired. It works very well in a church or gym for example. Aside from having mediocre bokeh, the 50 f/1.8 makes a good focal length for full-body portraits. If mounted on a 1.6x FOVCF camera, you will need some extra space to accomplish a full-body portrait and might also want to capture head/shoulder portraits with this lens.

Need to travel light? Mount the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens on a small DSLR and you have one of the smallest, lightest and least expensive low-light combinations available.

The drawbacks of the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens are easily overlooked when one looks at the price. This lens is not for everyone, but I don’t know of a better lens available for twice this price.

Conclusion – Pros

Excellent image quality when stopped down

Essentially no lateral chromatic aberration

Extremely cheap

Conclusion – Cons

Extremely cheaply built

Harsh and distracting bokeh due to pentagonal aperture

Vignetting at wide apertures on full frame (which only disappears at F3.5)

Inconsistent autofocus in low light (most problematic when using large apertures)

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II (Full Format) – Review by photozone.de

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II may be a “cheap” lens but it is undoubtedly a capable one. It shares its characteristics with most other 50mm lenses, reads: it’s somewhat soft at f/1.8 but at medium aperture settings it is hard to beat with respect to resolution. Distortions as well as lateral CAs are basically non-issues. Vignetting is a significant problem at f/1.8 and even at f/2.8 but that (heavy vignetting at max. aperture) is something to get used to on full format DSLRs anyway. A more significant weakness of the lens is the rather nervous bokeh (out-of-focus blur) which may spoil the game in some shallow depth-of-field situations. At around 100EUR/US$ you can’t expect superb build quality but frankly it’s “good enough” here anyway and it’s certainly one of the value kings out there.

soft under f 4, lens hood, narrow dof, bokeh a bit average, cheap feeling

very sharp, awesome portrait lens, very inexpensive cheap, great value, distance window

It provides an unusually bright and clear image in the finder. Even at full aperture, it delivers top image quality. Its angle of view and exceptional performance make the Planar T* 1.4/85 ZK the lens of choice for portraiture on location or in the studio.

Now offered as a “ZK” lens, for Pentax K-mount cameras. This lens will fully support Program mode, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and full Manual modes with any K-type camera introduced after 1998 (e.g. PZ, MZ, ZX, and all digital SLR cameras).

Its shallow depth of field at wide apertures allows the use of selective focus to emphasize the primary subject by defocusing the background.

The 9-blade, circular aperture produces a smooth and natural rendition of defocused images, as well as nearly circular shapes of point sources of light.

Geometrical distortion is imperceptibly low, allowing high quality documentation photographs, both analog and digital.

With a 6 element lens in 5 groups and the Zeiss T* lens coating, you can expect distortion-free performance, which only improves as the lens is stopped down. The f/1.4 aperture is very useful for shooting in low light, creatively controlling depth of field, and its nearly circular diaphragm helps create a pleasing look in your photo’s out-of-focus areas.

This Zeiss ZF.2 lens is designed for use with Nikon F-mount digital SLRs. Thanks to an electronic interface (CPU), ZF.2 lenses support all important camera functions such as the automatic mechanisms for time, aperture setting and program. The CPU also supports manual exposure settings, including those for cameras that are not AI-compatible. Since the lens transmits EXIF data such as manufacturer, date, metering system and exposure to the camera, photographers do not need to set their parameters manually. The quicker and faster handling capabilities of ZF.2 lenses are especially useful under hectic shooting conditions.

The Zeiss Distagon T* 35mm f/2.0 ZF.2 Lens is a classic focal length lens with a moderate wide-angle perspective. The Distagon T* 35mm f/2.0 provides very high image quality over a wide range of apertures and focusing ranges. The fast f/2.0 aperture enables hand-held photography under difficult lighting conditions and since it has a short focus rotation, it is great for action photography. When it is combined with a DSLR with a 1.5 crop factor, the lens has an effective focal length of 53mm (in 35mm format) and can be used as a standard focal length for a natural viewing perspective.

The new ZF.2 lenses are an enhanced version of ZF lenses. They feature an electronic interface (CPU) that enables support of all important camera operating modes such as shutter priority, aperture priority and programmed auto exposure or manual exposure settings on non-AI compatible camera housings. Photographers no longer have to set the parameters in the camera menu as the lens now transmits standard data such as focal length, speed and the aperture setting to the camera. This data can then be viewed in the EXIF data of each picture.

Furthermore, silver fork coupling is not available. For this reason, you cannot use light metering on older cameras (F, F2, Nikkormat, etc.). The ZF.2 lenses have a mechanical lock on the aperture ring to lock the aperture ring at the lowest setting and prevent unintentional adjustment while taking pictures.

For technical reasons, these lenses do not have a half-step aperture lock between the lowest (stop position) and the second lowest aperture setting. This guarantees reliable recognition of the automatic position. The lowest aperture on ZF.2 lenses is colored orange to emphasize the automatic position of the aperture ring.

The Zeiss ZF (ZE) Distagon T* 35mm f/2 may not deliver superb results on full format DSLRs but the quality is still impressive. The lens is sharp straight from f/2 and especially around f/4-5.6 and lateral CAs are nothing to worry about either. The moderate degree of distortions is about average for a prime lens in this class. However, a real weakness is the annoyingly high amount of vignetting at large aperture settings. The quality of the bokeh is pretty good for a lens in this class (and easily superior to the EF 35mm f/2).

The Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM is the second generation of large-aperture telephoto zoom lenses incorporating Sigma’s OS (Optical Stabilizer) anti-shake system. It offers the equivalent of shooting at shutter speeds 3 to 4 stops slower than without OS, thus allowing handheld telephoto zoom shooting even in poorly lit conditions. Its HSM ensures quiet and high speed AF as well as full-time manual focusing.
It features a large maximum aperture of f/2.8 that remains constant throughout the zoom range, making it incredibly valuable when shooting in low light situations such as wedding or other events. It is also great when shooting fast-moving subjects such as sports, when fast shutter speeds are needed to capture fleeting moments. The 70-200mm f/2.8 is fast and versatile and at a length of 7.8 (19.8cm) will be a tool that seldom sees the inside of your camera bag. The lens comes with a petal-type lens hood plus an adapter to extend its length for users with APS-c cameras.

Sigma’s New APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM is the second generation of this large aperture telephoto zoom lens now incorporating Sigma’s Optical Stabilization (OS) anti-shake system. It uses two sensors inside the lens to detect vertical and horizontal movement of the camera. It works by moving an optical image stabilizing lens group, to effectively compensate for camera shake.

Two FLD (“F” Low Dispersion) glass elements, which have the performance equal to expensive fluorite glass, and three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements, combine to provide excellent reduction of aberrations and image quality.

The rounded 9 blade diaphragm creates an attractive blur to the out of focus images (bokeh).

Sigma has managed to make the lens more compact than its predecessor, measuring only 7.8″ (8.64cm) in length.

The Super Multi-Layer lens coating reduces flare ghosting and assures high image quality throughout the entire zoom range.

The exterior of this lens is EX-finished to denote the superior build and optical quality, and to enhance its appearance.

The lens DG designation translates to large-aperture lenses with wide angles and short minimum focusing distances. With an abundance of peripheral illumination, they are ideal lenses for Digital SLR Cameras while retaining suitability for traditional 35mm SLRs.

Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG Macro HSM II review by DPReview.com

Conclusion – Pros

Decent image quality

Low vignetting even on full frame

Fast and positive autofocus

Very good build quality, excellent tripod collar design

Low price

Conclusion – Cons

Relatively weak at 200mm (softness, chromatic aberration, pincushion distortion on full frame)

Unconvincing ‘macro’ performance; soft at wider apertures, significant focus shift on stopping down

Red/cyan bokeh chromatic aberration

The Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG Macro HSM II is a prime example of an independent manufacturer producing a design which can challenge the camera companies’ own lenses in most aspects of optical and operational performance, but at a much lower price. In almost all regards it performs well in everyday use, delivering good quality images across a broad range of situations. The optics are perfectly competent, if not outstanding; indeed the lens is really very good towards the short end, but weaker at 200mm, where it’s slightly soft and suffers from relatively high levels of chromatic aberration. Vignetting is impressively low, even on full frame (presumably a benefit of that broad and stubby barrel design), and geometric distortion reasonably well controlled. So whilst the Sigma’s optics may not be technically quite up to the same standard as the competition, users will find few glaring faults in its performance either.

Two good reasons for buying a third party lens are to get features the camera manufacturer does not offer in one of its own lenses (such as a different focal length or focal length range) or to save money. The primary reason to buy the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM II Macro Lens is to save money as Canon already has 4 excellent-performing 70-200mm models including the similarly-spec’d Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L USM Lens. So, is there a trade-off for the lower price? That is the big question.

Pros:

workmanship of very high quality and a solid body,

very good image quality at the center of the frame,

very good image quality at the edge of the frame at 70 mm,

decently controlled coma,

virtually unnoticeable distortion,

slight vignetting,

fast, silent and efficient autofocus,

abounding standard equipment (tripod mount ring, lens hood, casing),

three-year warranty with optional prolonging by another two.

Cons:

too small resolution at the edge of the frame for the range 135-200 mm,

poor cooperation with the original Sigma converter,

chromatic aberration after stopping down reaches large dimensions,

distinct astigmatism.

As a result, the SP AF70-300mm F4-5.6 Di VC USD (Model A005) boasts sharper contrast and greater descriptive performance than all others in its class. In addition, it is the first Tamron lens sporting a USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive), Tamron’s very own ultrasonic auto-focus drive mechanism. This USD mechanism delivers fast focusing, making it a perfect telephoto zoom choice for photographing sports, racing, or other fast-moving subjects. The lens also boasts Tamron’s proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization to assist in hand-held photography, not only at long focal length ranges where blurring is common, but also under low-lit conditions, dramatically enhancing photographic freedom. This comnbination of best in class image resolution, Ultrasonic Silent Drive and Vibration Compensation is a new achievement of Tamron technology, culminating in the production of a premium 70-300mm telephoto zoom lens.

1. New optical system optimized for digital cameras achieves top resolution in the 70-300mm class with specialized glass elements including an XLD (Extra Low Dispersion) lens

This lens’ advanced optical design employs a sophisticated XLD (Extra Low Dispersion) lens element made from specialized high-grade glass that has lower dispersive properties than standard LD lenses (where refraction causes the dispersion of white light into spectral hues). The dispersive properties of the XLD lens are at a level similar to fluorite, and in combination with a LD element make for an optimal optical design that delivers best in class resolution with advanced axial chromatic and magnification aberration correction – major inhibitors of image quality enhancement. The result is a lens that delivers sharp contrast and better descriptive performance throughout the entire zoom range.

2. Fast focusing USD ( Ultrasonic Silent Drive), the ultrasonic autofocus drive

The lens is equipped with Tamron’s first-ever ultrasonic auto-focus drive USD ( Ultrasonic Silent Drive). It achieves faster focusing making this telephoto lens perfect for photography of sports, motor racing, and other fast-moving subjects. With advanced motor technology and newly developed software, Tamron’s USD delivers precise and noiseless focusing at turbo speed.
USD ( Ultrasonic Silent Drive) Tamron’s USD works with the high-frequency ultrasonic vibrations that are produced by a ring called a ‘stator’. Energy from the vibrations is used to rotate an attached metallic ring known as the ‘rotor’. Piezoelectric ceramic, an element that produces ultrasonic vibrations when voltage of a specific frequency is applied is arranged in a ring formation on the stator. This electrode configuration of piezoelectric ceramic causes two ultrasonic vibrations to occur in the stator. By effectively combining these two ultrasonic vibrations, it is possible to convert the energy from the vibrations that produced simple motion into energy known as ‘deflective traveling waves’, which then moves around the circumference (rotation direction) of the ring. With the USD, the friction between these deflective traveling waves created on the metallic surface of the stator and the surface of the rotor produce force, causing the rotor to rotate. The focusing ring lens, which is linked to the rotor, is thus moved, creating a fast and smooth auto-focus drive.

3. Equipped with Tamron’s VC ( Vibration Compensation) image stabilization

The SP 70-300mm F4-5.6 Di VC USD employs Tamron’s esteemed image stabilization mechanism–VC ( Vibration Compensation) seen in both the AF18-270mm Di II VC (Model B003) and SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II VC (Model B005). With VC, the photographer has the freedom to shoot at a shutter speed that is an extra four stops slower without having to worry about blurring. This makes capturing handheld, evening, night, and interior shots much easier.

VC ( Vibration Compensation)

Tamron’s VC mechanism employs a three-coil system, whereby three driving coils activate the shake-compensating VC lens group electromagnetically via three steel balls. The VC lens elements are held in place only by contact with the steel balls, achieving smooth movement with little friction. This provides a stable viewfinder image with excellent tracking performance that eliminates the blur from camera shake for cleaner, crisper shots.

4. Full time manual focus at your fingertips

Auto-focus has many benefits but sometimes the photographer needs the control of manual focus. Full time manual offers just that: the crossover from auto-focus to manual focus by simply adjusting the focus ring, allowing the photographer to make adjustments on the fly. This feature helps the lens produce impressive results even in telephoto situations where the depth of field is narrow.

5. Better balance and consistent length with internal focusing

When focusing, the internal elements of the lens move and the lens’ external size does not change. This offers better balance and easier telephoto shots. Moreover, the barrel is not subject to stray light entering from external helicoids that can negatively affect images. And because the external elements do not move, it makes it easier to utilize polarizing filters and the flower shape hood to control the amount of light that enters the lens.

6. Enjoyable photography for a wide range of enthusiasts, from those using traditional film cameras, to digital SLRs with full-frame or APS-C size sensors

With a full-frame digital or 35mm SLR, portrait and medium telephoto shots can be achieved on the wider 70mm end of the range and spectacular telephoto shots at the longer 300mm side. When using an ASP-C sensor camera the angle of view changes, giving it the equivalent range of 109-465mm for bold ultra-telephoto shots. And with a maximum magnification ratio 1:4, the lens can be used to explore in the realm of semi-macro photography.

7. Uncompromising countermeasures to reduce ghosting and flare

Digital photography requires extreme precision, which is why Tamron incorporates new BBAR (Broad-Band Anti Reflection) multilayer coatings that reduce reflection into the lens elements. This ensures excellent performance in all photographic conditions and enhances light transmission on both long and short wavelengths. Also, Tamron applies internal surface coatings on cemented surfaces of lens elements to make images sharper with better color reproduction and balance.

8. Simple yet beautiful exterior design

Tamron adopted a simple design with a smooth silhouette to ensure that this lens fits well with various SLR cameras. The exquisite textured paint gives a well-crafted finish to the exterior.

9. Flower-shaped hood with excellent stray light shielding properties–a standard accessory

The flower-shaped hood has been designed specifically to block out damaging light rays and ensures clear, sharp descriptive performance.
