Autofocus Nikkor 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5D IF-ED review by bythom.com
Drawbacks
- Build. Not a professional build, especially the clunky aperture ring. Still, it’s solid, and the focus and zoom rings are smooth, if not silky.
- No depth of field scale.
- Corner softness. Wide open you’ll certainly see a moderate amount of softness in the corners at 18mm. As you stop down (or zoom in), the softness becomes acceptable and barely noticeable.
Positives
- On a digital body it shines. Get rid of the corners and this lens does quite well. D1 and D100 owners will like this lens.
- Value. Decent value for 35mm users, great value for digital users.
Nikkor AF 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5D ED – Review by photozone.de
The Nikkor AF 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5D ED is capable to produce very good to excellent images when shooting at and beyond f/5.6. At max. aperture the border performance is far less impressive due to the lack of contrast and resolution (specifically at 35mm). The level of distortions is very high at 18mm so it’s not a lens that you’d use for serious architecture photography. Vignetting is generally a non-issue whereas lateral CAs are very pronounced at 18mm (less so beyond). The build quality of the lens is fine for a consumer grade lens although it’s nothing to rave about either. All-in-all the lens had its time but there are simply better alternatives out there by now.
