Sony 28mm f2.8 Lens Review by alphamountworld.com
For its use, the Sony 28mm f2.8 shines. The best traits heavily outweigh its worst for most circumstances. I warn however not to expect the “moon” from a $249.00 dollar prime lens. Some will scoff the 28mm 2.8′s downsides of “only” having a 2.8 bright aperture, and softer images to f4.5, while others will appreciate them. To me, I find the softer larger apertures a versatile quality, if I want sharp I simply stop down a bit. Its advantages outweigh its disadvantages about 3 to 1 overall so it is really hard to fault this lens. If you want a sharper lens and want to pay another $100.00 more retail, the 50mm 1.4 is available, but it doesn’t go nearly as wide which doesn’t make it as versatile as the Sony 28mm 2.8. Even more expensive is the 20mm prime at $559.00, which doesn’t serve too well as a portrait lens in general. To me it is a lens that any photographer should have in their bag, simply when you cannot decide which prime to use, you just slap on your 28mm and go.
I was surprised to find that this lens grew on me. I have seen a bit of talk on the net talking this lens down, but that is usually isolated in ultimate sharpness comparison to much more expensive lenses. To me that isn’t a fair comparison. After you buy this lens and use it, you might find that doing so is much more enlightening than impressions given on the net (assuming your photography has a need for this kind of lens). If its price tag and weight don’t win you over, maybe the extremely fast auto focus (and good low light auto focus) and lack of discernible distortion will. Overall the lens has no big glaring faults, and it is hard to fault a lens with such qualities.
This lens gets a 9 out of 10.00 in the cost for performance category and an overall rating of 8.5 out of 10.00. A great lens (and safe) to add to your Alpha Kit.
